Duke Nukem II: 5 Handy DOS-Era Tricks for Rigelatin
| Rigelatin trouble, played under a very warm VGA sunset. |
Table of Contents ๐
Released for PC in December 1993, Duke Nukem II is Apogeeโs colourful 256-colour sequel: four episodes with eight stages apiece, while episode one was the original shareware sampler. GameSpotโs release record and the 3D Realms archive are useful period references.
Five tricks worth remembering
Use the full aiming range. Arrow keys move and aim;
Ctrljumps,Altfires, andPgUp/PgDnmake Duke look up or down. Looking down before a blind drop and aiming up under a ledge makes several enemy placements much less unfair. The control reference documents the keyboard layout.Restart beacons are your real safety net. Activate one before probing suspicious floors, ceilings, and walls. It moves the retry point forward, so secret hunting costs far less time.
Play the level twice when a secret is tempting. First clear it normally and learn the enemy rhythm; then revisit side passages and odd-looking walls. The first episode contains the famous opening prison sequence and is the best place to learn the gameโs visual language.
Keep the registered-version cheats separate from the shareware demo. During play,
EATrestores health.NUK(orDUKM) supplies a weapon plus the inventory needed for the current level. These are documented for the PC full game; the shareware episode deliberately rejects cheat input. StrategyWikiโs cheat reference records both the restriction and the effects.Treat the shareware episode as a proper test run. It is not freeware and not the complete game: it is one episode intended to demonstrate the full release. That distinction matters when collecting old DOS titles.
Play it legally
The archived 3D Realms master download page lists 4duke.zip as the official v1.0 Duke Nukem II shareware episode. The Duke Nukem Repositoryโs Shareware page also identifies it as the 1.06 MB shareware release. For a complete version, use a current licensed retailer or an official collection rather than treating the shareware episode as the full game.
